Echinacea (Purple Coneflower)

A difficult name, but easy flower. Traditionally a lavender color, you can now find numerous colors and even varieties with fluffy centers. Lovely as both a cut flower and as texture in the vase (remove petals), coneflower will bloom steadily from summer to fall. I leave this perennial alone until early spring so that both the birds and I can enjoy the texture the dark seed cones add to the garden throughout fall and winter. Echinacea has many medicinal uses and is known to boost immunity.
